TMC Seminar (Online): “Hoping for a Medical Miracle in Pediatric Care and Beyond” with Ryan Antiel, MD, and Alex Lion, DO

Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME is a pediatric surgeon, researcher, and ethicist focused on improving the lives of children and families confronted with difficult surgical decision-making and end-of-life issues.  He is Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and Faculty Investigator at the Indiana University Center for Bioethics.
His research combines empirical approaches from the fields of epidemiology, decision-making sciences, and child outcomes with conceptual work grounded in moral philosophy and theology.  He applies these approaches to address ethical challenges surrounding the care of seriously ill fetuses and neonates.  He has co-authored over 70 articles and chapters addressing these topics.
Dr. Alex Lion is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children. Dr. Lion’s clinical work focuses on pediatric neuro-oncology and cancer predisposition, with a scholarly focus on the integration of spirituality in medicine. He is the co-director of the Religion and Spirituality in Medicine Scholarly Concentration at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the associate director of the Evans Center for Spiritual and Religious Values in Healthcare at IU Health.  He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Public Health from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed Residency at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and Fellowship at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.  Dr. Lion also completed a Fairbanks Clinical Ethics Fellowship at Indiana University. He is currently working towards his certificate in Theology, Medicine, and Culture at Duke Divinity School.  When not working, Dr. Lion enjoys reading comic books, and spending time with his wife and three children (currently playing Metroid Dread).
